Preparing to host global events with technological innovations

As the City of Los Angeles prepares to host the world for the 2026 World Cup, 2027 Super Bowl, 2028 Olympics, and 2028 Paralympic Games, the City of Los Angeles faced a massive human challenge: how to empower 27,000+ city employees to move beyond “grunt work” and deliver high-value digital services to 4 million residents. In a city as diverse as L.A., where over 224 languages are spoken, the mission to provide digital equity meant that foundational AI tools were no longer a luxury, but a necessity to remain a global powerhouse in public service. By partnering with Google Public Sector and expanding their 15-year relationship with Google Workspace, the city is building a new era of American innovation through the enterprise-wide adoption of Google Gemini.

The impact of this transformation is anchored in a secure, contractually protected environment that prioritizes privacy and security while driving radical efficiency. The results are tangible and immediate: in one standout case, a city employee utilized Gemini to complete a complex board report – a task that traditionally required two full days of work – in just two hours following a single hour of training. By making 27,000+ employees “AI fluent,” Los Angeles is breaking down language barriers and accelerating the Smart LA 2028 vision, ensuring that every city worker has the modern tools needed to serve their constituents with speed, accuracy, and heart.

It became very clear very quickly that AI was no longer a ‘nice to have’ but a ‘need to have.’ AI is a once-in-a-generation shift, the same way computers dramatically changed the workforce. Our customers expect us to use AI, our employees expect us to have AI tools, and we’re expected to do a lot more with less.
